A fase REM do sono é um momento em que há alta atividade cerebral e ocorrência dos sonhos mais vívidos. É essencial para a consolidação da memória e o equilíbrio emocional.
Durante essa fase, as células MCH são ativadas de maneira seletiva. De forma intrigante, em vez de facilitarem a recordação dos sonhos, elas parecem atuar ajudando a esquecê-los.
Isso sugere que, mesmo em um momento de intensa atividade criativa do cérebro, ele ativa células específicas para impedir que os sonhos sejam lembrados.Esse processo é visto como uma forma de “limpeza” de informações que não são essenciais.

Como os sonhos geralmente não são úteis ou importantes para a sobrevivência imediata, o cérebro os classifica como descartáveis e os elimina antes que cheguem à memória de longo prazo.
O momento em que a pessoa acorda influencia bastante na chance de lembrar do sonho.
Quando o despertar ocorre durante ou logo após a fase REM, é mais provável que o conteúdo dos sonhos ainda esteja ível na memória de curto prazo.

Porém, essa forma de memória é muito instável e costuma se apagar rapidamente (geralmente em cerca de 10 a 15 minutos). A menos que haja algum esforço consciente para registrá-la.
Uma maneira de melhorar a lembrança dos sonhos é manter um diário ao lado da cama e anotar qualquer detalhe assim que acordar. Outra técnica simples é repetir mentalmente, antes de dormir, a intenção de lembrar dos sonhos, isso ajuda o cérebro a se preparar para essa tarefa.
Sem esse esforço, o cérebro rapidamente o descarta durante as atividades do dia, fazendo parecer que ele nunca aconteceu.

Com treino e dedicação, algumas pessoas conseguem ter sonhos lúcidos, momentos em que sabem que estão sonhando e conseguem controlar o que acontece no sonho.
Nesses casos, a lembrança do sonho costuma ser mais clara e duradoura, porque o cérebro está mais alerta e engajado durante a experiência.
Alguns especialistas acreditam que esquecer a maioria dos sonhos tem uma função evolutiva.Como os sonhos podem ser confusos, emocionalmente fortes ou até angustiantes, guardá-los como memórias reais poderia causar confusão entre fantasia e realidade.

O cérebro, nesse sentido, age como um filtro seletivo. Apenas os sonhos com carga emocional intensa ou que são lembrados logo ao acordar conseguem ar por esse filtro e virar memória.
Os outros são apagados aos poucos, como partes de uma realidade que nunca foi totalmente nossa.
