No ado, distante e recente, duas grandes greves, com intervalo exatos de 100 anos, entraram para a história: 1917 e 2017.
Foram dois grandes movimentos trabalhistas, mas com diferentes contextos e reivindicações. Em julho de 1917, 50 mil operários (10% da população paulistana) paralisaram praticamente todas as fábricas da Capital, se tornando a primeira grande greve da história do Brasil.
Com a Europa sendo afetada pela Primeira Guerra Mundial, os industriais brasileiros aram a enriquecer com o aumento da demanda. O ritmo de trabalho ficou mais pesado sem pagamento extra aos trabalhadores. As condições também eram insalubres e, praticamente, não havia direitos trabalhistas.

Isso levou ao movimento que parou a cidade. O governo reagiu com violência. Não havia entidades empresariais para negociar com os trabalhadores, serviço que ficou a cargo dos jornais paulistanos.
A greve chegou ao fim 30 dias depois, com promessa de 20% de reajuste salarial, liberação dos grevistas presos, não demissão dos trabalhadores que pararam, direito a associação e melhores condições de trabalho.
“Meses depois, os empresários começaram a voltar atrás nos compromissos. De qualquer forma, a greve de 1917 representou uma conquista histórica: foi a primeira vez que o poder público no Brasil negociou com os trabalhadores”, contou o historiador Luigi Biondi, da Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Unifesp), a Agência Senado, em 2017.

No dia 28 de abril de 2017, São Paulo voltou a parar com nova greve geral, convocada pelas centrais sindicais e movimentos sociais contra as reformas propostas pelo governo Michel Temer.
A paralisação ocorreu na maioria das capitais e em várias cidades grandes do Brasil.
Na capital paulista, ônibus, trens e a maioria das linhas de metrô pararam durante toda a manhã. Algumas voltaram a funcionar, mas de forma parcial, no início da tarde.
Outras categorias, como os profissionais de educação, também pararam. O Sindicato dos Bancários estimou que 62 mil empregados de instituições financeiras aderiram à greve, com o fechamento de 530 agências e 15 centros istrativos.

Foi registrado confronto entre manifestantes e forças policiais na zona oeste, região da casa do presidente Michel Temer.
Vagner Freitas, presidente da CUT, declarou à Agência Brasil que foi a “a maior greve já realizada no País”. A Força Sindical estimou que 40 milhões de trabalhadores pararam em todo o Brasil.
O governo, por sua vez, chamou o movimento de “fracasso”. Também à Agência Brasil, o ministro da Justiça, Osmar Serraglio, considerou baixa a adesão da população.

Na prática, os protestos de 2017 tiveram menos êxito que a do século anterior. As propostas do governo, incluindo as reformas trabalhista e previdenciária, foram aprovadas pelo Congresso e entraram em vigor.
