O presidente Jair Bolsonaro levou ao plenário da ONU (Organização das Nações Unidas) um discurso que reproduziu o repertório ideológico de seu grupo político, com ataques a outros países e um tom de enfrentamento em relação às críticas sofridas por seu governo.

O objetivo de Bolsonaro era marcar o que ele classifica como uma nova era para o Brasil, segundo auxiliares. Nas palavras de um deles, que participou diretamente da elaboração do texto, a imagem que o presidente queria imprimir era de um governo revolucionário.
Em 32 minutos, o presidente apresentou o socialismo como um adversário e um risco às nações, fez uma série de referências religiosas, chegou a celebrar o golpe militar de 1964 e insistiu na ideia de que a crise da Amazônia é contaminada por interesses econômicos estrangeiros.
Ele também acusou a imprensa de manipulação, atacou seus adversários políticos, voltou a criticar a França e questionou a atuação da ONU na defesa dos interesses dos países membros.

"É uma falácia dizer que a Amazônia é patrimônio da humanidade e um equívoco, como atestam os cientistas, afirmar que a floresta é o pulmão do mundo. Valendo-se dessas falácias, um ou outro país, em vez de ajudar, embarcou nas mentiras da mídia e se portou de forma desrespeitosa, com espírito colonialista. Questionaram aquilo que nos é mais sagrado, a nossa soberania", afirmou.
Antes da chegada a Nova York, assessores discutiam a possibilidade de fazer um pronunciamento mais moderado no campo ambiental, a fim de evitar novos choques com líderes internacionais e com a própria ONU, mas o presidente decidiu seguir o caminho contrário.
Entretanto, outro auxiliar que ajudou na construção do discurso afirmou que Bolsonaro quis dar sua voz e estilo ao pronunciamento, disse algumas vezes que não queria se policiar ou se pautar por ideias que não mostrassem a direção de seu governo e fez prevalecer o tom mais assertivo da fala.
